Introduction: Chitosan is used in conjunction with 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate, being effective against Streptococci sanguis and at the same time is a great adjuvant in the control of bacterial plaque; its use has shown significant differences compared to the use of chlorhexidine alone and mechanical control. Objetive: To compare the efectivity of chlorhedixine with chitosan at 0.1% vs conventional chlorhexidine at 0.12% for the bacterial plaque control and gingivitis in pregnant women. Materials and Methods: Comparative, experimental study in pregnant women of any age, in gestation weeks 12 to 26, who attended prenatal consultation at the General Hospital of Tampico “Dr. Carlos Canseco”. The study was authorized by the Ethics and Research Committee. They were randomly classified into two groups, the control group that included patients treated with 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwashes and the experimental group treated with 0.1% chlorhexidine mouthwashes with chitosan. The Green and Vermillon simplified oral hygiene index and the De Löe and Silness gingival index were measured at baseline and 7 days. Differences between groups were analyzed using Student's t test and χ2. Results: A statistically significant difference was identified in both groups between the initial stage and seven days after the mouthwash supply (p = 0.001). Conclusions: the percentage of the individual IHOS between the comparison of the conventional chlorhexidine at 0.12% vs the chlorhexidine with chitosan at 0.1% with the initial measurement, demostrated that 7 days after showed a significant difference (p= 0.001).
