Background
Currently, higher risks of maternal-fetal complications are observed in pregnant women positive for COVID-19. Given the high infectivity of SARS-CoV-2, it is a priority to screen those patients who will undergo surgical procedures in which there is contact between patient and health personnel to identify and protocol their care in a safely manner.
Objective
Study the incidence of COVID-19 in pregnant patients undergoing surgical protocol for the resolution of pregnancy in the Hospital “Dr. Carlos Canseco”.
Materials and methods
An observational, descriptive, transversal and single-center study was carried out in the northeast region of Mexico, 80 pregnant women were included that required surgical protocol. The PCR test was performed to identify infection by SARS-CoV-2 and statistical analyzes were done for description and comparison of the cohort.
Results
The SARS-CoV-2 incidence was 6.2% in pregnant women with surgical protocol. These patients presented a higher percentage of comorbidities as body mass index>25, gestational diabetes mellitus and gestational hypertension than healthy pregnant women. No vertical transmission, maternal-infant mortality, or transmission of the infection to health personnel were observed given the protocol implemented for the management of this group of patients.
Conclusions
The relevance of preoperative screening for SARS-CoV-2 was demonstrated in order to prepare the protocol of care for COVID-19 patients in a safe and effective way for them and the health personnel. The protection measures implemented in the hospital were adequate to avoid vertical transmission, as well as towards occupationally exposed health personnel.
