Abstract

The term face masks refers to a wide range of personal protective equipment whose primary function is to reduce the transmission of particles or aerosols between a user and his or her environment. Recent studies suggest that face masks reduce the spread of COVID-19 in different populations thereby attenuating the epidemic growth curve. [1, 2] In Asian countries such as China, South Korea, Japan and Thailand the use of face masks is very common; contamination and previous respiratory disease outbreaks such as SARS and H1N1 is the reason for such practice. Some countries in Europe such as Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Turkey, Germany, among others have also chosen to implement the use of face masks. [3] The current outbreak of COVID-19 has been devastating and for this reason China established the mandatory use of face masks. In this country the total number of cases is 86,829 and deaths are limited to 4,634. (3) In contrast, in Mexico there are a total of 1,320,545 cumulative cases and 118,202 deaths directly related to the new strain of coronavirus as of December 21, 2020. [4] The use of personal protective equipment to prevent contagion and spread of COVID-19 disease is a controversial issue, as there are different guidelines in different countries and regulatory systems. [5] COVID-19 disease is initially acute pulmonary syndrome caused by SARS-CoV-2. Transmission of this virus is similar to other coronaviruses, which is by particulate, contact and airborne routes.
