Abstract

Open abdomen (OA) is the deferral of closure of the abdominal cavity after a laparotomy, leaving controlled visceral exposure through a temporary abdominal closure. AA is indicated in cases of damage control surgery due to trauma, severe intra-abdominal sepsis, abdominal compartment syndrome, tension wall closure and massive abdominal wall loss. The Bogotá bag represents one of the techniques with the lowest cost and ease of methodology for the approach to AA, which could require new laparotomies, development or suspicion of abdominal compartment syndrome, need for drainage or periodic lavage of the septic abdominal cavity 48-72 hours after the first surgical treatment. The presentation of this case reaffirms the use of the Bogotá bag as a surgical resource recognized worldwide and considered a great contribution from Latin America to easy-access and low-cost general surgery, with maximum benefit, unfortunately it tends to be displaced by considered an obsolete or cumbersome method, and it should be seen as a moldable platform in order to adapt to the needs of the surgical field.
