INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by a decrease in bone mass density, which leads to bone fragility and a high risk of fracture. More and more efforts are being made to create and implement prevention programs that are effective and for this it is necessary to know the degree of understanding and comprehension that people have about osteoporosis. To this end, tools have been created that establish the level of information already acquired by patients, such as the OKAT and its variants. There is not yet a reliable questionnaire validated as such to evaluate osteoporosis in the Mexican population.
OBJECTIVE: To conduct a literature review of the application of the OKAT questionnaire for osteoporosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A search for articles related to the topic of osteoporosis was carried out in sites such as PubMed and Google Scholar, using the OKAT questionnaire for the measurement and validation of knowledge about osteoporosis. The following keywords were used: OKAT, osteoporosis, perceptions, knowledge, knowledge measurement, prevention and attitudes.
RESULTS: Of 126 articles that were considered, only 18 of them met the inclusion criteria. Knowledge related to osteoporosis is higher at younger age and higher level of education.
CONCLUSIONS: People’s attitudes and knowledge towards osteoporosis are poor when using the OKAT questionnaire. Education improves knowledge of risk factors, consequences and preventive actions, although this does not translate into their application in the population at risk.
KEYWORDS: OKAT, perception, knowledge, prevention, education.
