Handwashing hygiene habits among students in their 9th and 10th semesters of the Medical Surgeon degree program

Handwashing is one of the most basic, simple, and effective strategies to prevent nosocomial infections. However, compliance rates remain low despite the measures implemented by the World Health Organization (WHO), making contamination through the hands of healthcare personnel the most common pattern in most cases of pathogen transmission.
The handwashing technique has been standardized by the WHO, establishing the steps, duration, and appropriate moments for performing it. In this way, several benefits are obtained, such as helping to prevent the spread of germs and microorganisms from one person to another, protecting the health of both patients and healthcare personnel, and avoiding contamination of hospital materials. It is of vital importance that medical students about to begin their hospital internship not only know the correct technique but also understand the appropriate location and frequency for handwashing. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the level of knowledge and handwashing habits among medical students to implement appropriate corrective measures, such as adjustments to programs related to the matter, courses or training sessions, as well as awareness talks on the importance of this fundamental procedure.
This is an observational (non-experimental), transversal and descriptive study, in which a survey was administered to 123 students in the 9th and 10th semesters of the Medical Surgeon program, regarding their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to handwashing. The results showed a high level of declarative behavior, an adequate level of knowledge, and a positive attitude, with the observation that handwashing is not always applied in all clinical activities, making this an area for improvement.
